Five Balinese Dishes to Try

From sate lilit to bebek betutu: the dishes our restaurant is proudest of, and the stories behind them.

Our kitchen cooks with what the island grows and what the morning boats bring in. These are the five dishes we would order on your first night.

Sate lilit

Minced fish mixed with coconut, lime leaf and spices, wrapped around lemongrass stalks and grilled over coconut husks.

Bebek betutu

Duck rubbed with a rich spice paste, wrapped in banana leaves and slow-cooked for hours until it falls from the bone. Order it a day ahead.

Sambal matah

A raw sambal of shallot, lemongrass, chilli and lime, served with almost everything. Ask for it on the side if you prefer less heat.

Lawar

A fresh salad of long beans, grated coconut and spices, traditionally made for ceremonies and shared at the table.

Bubur injin

Black rice pudding with coconut milk and palm sugar. It is the dessert our guests ask about most.

The restaurant is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. On Thursdays we cook a Balinese set menu for the whole terrace.

“The best dish on the island is the one someone's grandmother still makes on a Sunday.”
